You could have been a professional “Knocker up” – What job would you have had in the 1920’s?

If you’re getting bored at work (or bored of going through the job market) did you ever stop to think about the kind of job you would have done almost 100 years ago?
Perhaps you’re good at getting up early? If so, you could have been a professional “knocker-up”  –  and made the equivalent of $70k a year!
Compared to how life was just a few decades ago, life in the 21st century looks like science-fiction. We work on tiny portable computers and spend our wages using apps on our smart phones. But how would you have got by in the ‘Roaring Twenties’?

For example, if you’re an early riser, you might have found yourself among the last of the knocker-uppers. In the days before reliable alarm clocks (or Siri), people were still employed to wake early and walk around waking up the workers who needed to get up before sunrise. You could earn a lot of money if you worked independently. One woman claimed to make the equivalent of £35k a year doing just that.

So if you’re growing bored of your safe modern job, have a look at our new infographic. It is the perfect guide to finding what job you might have done if you’d been on the job market ninety years ago.
