On the road again…After the Commonwealth Games we are off to Canberra and Melbourne and wrap up of Art Deco..

Hello Ladies, I can hardly believe it is now the end of March!  How have you all been?  I don’t like it one bit when life goes by so fast, I want the days to be longer!  Is that just me?  Seems like I am getting older faster these days!

I know for one thing.. I miss having the discipline & time to sit, read, research and write articles for my website instead I seem to focus a disproportionate amount of time on all the social media platforms I am managing.. Does anyone have that problem?  How do you manage it?  Pray tell!  Between managing our Swing Dance School’s Instagram and multiple FB groups pages and the Insta and FB for The Lindy Charm School and my Charity Beauties Feeling Fabulous.. I get LOST!!  I admire those who can manage, prioritise and plan their daily tasks…  My TO DO list seems to carry over every day!   Anyway, enough of the poor time management rant!!  On to the fun stuff thats coming up!!

  1. Gold Coast Commonwealth Games
  2. Canberra and Melbourne Workshops
  3. Wrap Up of Outfits from our recent Trip to Napier Art Deco Festival In New Zealand

Brag Time – Nothing to do with Vintage Styling BUT everything to do with backing yourself, working hard, asking the heavens and the universe for what you want…:

I have to share with you a little secret… When the Gold Coast Won bid to host the Commonwealth Games, my Mum was ecstatic.. she was straight on to me saying that our little Swing Dance School Swing On In should get involved, had every faith in us and just knew it would happen.. Through the rose coloured, infinite loved up glasses of your Mum, she was 100% sure we would be right where we are today!  Well fast forward a couple of years, the will, the wish and the thought was out there in the universe… and then My Mum passed away along with a whole lot of other sad stuff that happened over that period to take our focus away from anything fancy and fun like dancing at the Commonwealth Games..  BUT… Having Angels up there and our previous positive thoughts already in the universe, it was enough and we were approached to put together a team and choreograph a dance, train and perform AT The Commonwealth Games!!  Sheesh!!  This Tuesday it all starts for us with onsite rehearsals and then performing 6 times a day for 10 days to 6600 delegates and athletes each day…   Mum would be so so proud.. as are we just quietly.  Suffice to say for the next two weeks it will be head down and legs up in the air (I’m talking about dancing here!)

Meet our team:

March, April and May are traditionally very hard times for me personally with the anniversaries of the passing of Mum, Dad and Elisha BUT I have learnt that if I continue doing something I love and surrounding myself with wonderful experiences over that time, the days get easier and pass with joy not sadness so …Once we come up for air, get a few massages, a little lie down and a Bex..   I will be packing my two red suitcases and hitting the road..  Off to Canberra then Melbourne I go.

I will also be running some Gold Coast & Sydney events in between so stay tuned for that info when to hand.

Outfit of the Day Wrap Up of Napier Art Deco Festival:

Here is a quick video to give you an overall look and feel of the event, followed by some history and lastly and all importantly OUR outfits!  So much sharing this experience with my husband and girlfriends (Vanessa, Tessa, Tina-Louis, Mayhem and Chaos)

Art Deco Festival 2018

IF VIDEO DOES NOT LOAD HAVE A LOOK HERE:

Ray and I with a few close friends and many more friends we have met on previous visits totally immersed ourselves into the 4 day weekend and we have to say that it is still one of the cheapest and easiest and most fun of little getaways we have ever had.  The festival, the people who run it and the whole town’s community behind it are the friendliest, most helpful and delightful of any festival we have been a visitor too.  As with any occasion, the getting ready part is the most fun BUT on this occasion, the getting ready, the travel and the immersion into every days events were like ground hog day of fun..
Why so cheap?  – Well, we suffered Jetstar and bought tickets early.  Yes we wanted to stay in the heart of town so opted for the Criterion Backpackers (Yes Backpackers) and Jeff our host has a policy not to bump any prices up through Art Deco Festival (Yes.. a novelty and rarity for a business owner)  He was awesome, the backpackers was awesome and step out our front door and you are literally amongst it, sit on our balcony and you are literally amongst it.. All this for $180 a piece for 5 days!  YES!!!   WINNING!

Her are some picture of our outfits, I hope they come through.  I LOVE how my husband Ray got right into it and designed and made most of his “Best Dressed 2nd Pace Winning Outfit himself but he also has a secret weapon in his MUM who always helps with his and my own outfits!

My secret weapon to win 2nd place in best dress was my beautiful friend Jenni from Jack’s Daughter (From Melbourne and has her own easy shop).  Jenni has made so many stunning outfits for me as has my Mother in Law (Kath) and I am truly blessed that they just “Get it” when I send them an idea…THANK YOU from me xxx

What is Art Deco? – Via The Napier Art Deco Trust

Far from the world’s great population centres and from the European and American cities where 20th Century design evolved lays a small city that is unique.

Napier, New Zealand, was rebuilt in the early 1930s following a massive Richter 7.8 Earthquake. Subsequent fires destroyed most of its commercial heart. By the end of the decade, Napier was the newest city on the globe.

Nowhere else can you see such a variety of buildings in the styles of the 1930s – Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission, and above all Art Deco, the style of the 20th Century – in such a concentrated area.

Napier’s Art Deco is unique, with Maori motifs and the buildings of Louis Hay, admirer of the great Frank Lloyd Wright.

Enhanced by palms and the angular Norfolk Island pines which are its trademark, and surrounded by fertile fruit and grape growing plains, dramatic hills and the shores of the South Pacific, beautiful Napier is the centre of the Hawke’s Bay region.

In Napier, you can enjoy the legacy of its brave rebuilding and savour the spirit of the optimistic Art Deco era.

It became widely known following the great Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, held in Paris in 1925 and from which its name was ultimately derived.
By the late 1930’s it was in its streamlined phase and after World War II, the International Style, devoid of all decoration, held sway. Not until the late 1960’s did people begin to rediscover it and take it seriously.

Art Deco expressed all the vigor and optimism of the roaring twenties, and the idealism and escapism of the grim thirties.

Its decorative themes are:

  • Sunbursts and fountains – representing the dawn of a new modern age.
  • The Skyscraper shape – symbolic of the 20th century.
  • Symbols of speed, power and flight – the exciting new developments in transport and communications.
  • Geometric shapes – representing the machine and technology which it was thought would solve all our problems.
  • The new woman – reveling in her recently won social freedoms.
  • Breaking the rules – cacophonous jazz, short skirts and hair, shocking dances.
  • Ancient cultures – for oddly enough, there was a fascination with the civilizations of Egypt and Central America.
