Meet our Mr Suavecito “Suave Gent” for September – Mr Brian Clarke!

It gives me great pleasure to introduce a genuinely dapper & suave gent, Mr Brian Clarke.  Brian, from the first time I met him, has always displayed impeccable style, grace, charm and manners, he is the epitome of what I consider a true gentlemen..  what I, along with everyone he meets, like most is his ability to make people laugh, to laugh at himself and to always make people feel welcomed and relaxed in any environment that he is in…  I hope you enjoy getting to know Brian a little better here…

Brian

Name: Brian Clarke

Age: 47

Starsign: Taurus

Hobbies: Lindy Hop, and if I like something I will do it until I am bored with it

Likes: Love my Sports, Reading

Dislikes: Loud obnoxious self opinionated people

What’s your favourite all time inspirational quote? Life is extraordinarily suave and sweet with certain natural, witty, affectionate people who have unusual distinction and are capable of every vice, but who make a display of none in public and about whom one can affirm a single one. Marcel Proust

What, for you, epitomises the very essence of a Suave Gent? Casual, agreeable, sophisticated, pleasantly tactful and well-mannered man who appears to deal with every situation in which he finds himself with confidence, strength and dignity, but also with humour.

What is your idea of a heavenly day? A late breakfast with friends, followed by a quick browse at my favourite clothing shop, then meeting up with friends for a wine and dance in the evening.

What is your idea of Hell on Earth My idea of Hell on Earth is to be trapped in a car with a red-neck Michelin man of questionable personal hygiene, who insists on playing deafening, head-banging music all the way to the bowling alley.

What do you consider to be the absolute key essential to being Suave? Personal grooming, social interaction and enviable transportation.

Living, or deceased – who is your perfectly groomed role model? Gregory Peck, Cary Grant, Clark Gable , James Bond in all his incarnations, especially Sean Connery

What 3 items of clothing would you rescue if your wardrobe  was on fire? Only 3 oh my goodness gracious me, My Leather bomber jacket , Bond Street Number 5 after shave, My Vintage styled Suit

What 3 lessons would you/will you teach your son/nephew/boy child if you could? A quote from Steve Jobs comes immediately to mind “Your life is limited so don’t waste it living someone else’s life”, Focus on your goals, and believe in your selves.

Excuse me Mam/Miss? Or Hey Lady  Ma’am usually makes a woman feel extremely OLD or suspect that the talker has spent time in prison!  Excuse me (by itself) is suave, because it is inoffensive to all.

Do you feel comfortable opening doors, offering right of way and pulling out a chair etc for ladies or has that time passed? Good manners and being courteous should come naturally to a true gentleman and I feel quite comfortable with displaying them – if the woman does not like to be treated with respect, then that is her problem, not mine.

Are you wary when offering an innocent compliment to a lady if you do know them? And why? No, I believe that offering an innocent compliment can make anyone’s day but it has to be sincere or it comes over sleazy rather than suave.

To dance or not to dance? My dancing ability is limited at best although I do love to dance

Do you think a grooming/suave subject should be reintroduced/included in today’s school curriculum? Yes I do; grunge and unkempt presentation is so common these days and does not impress anyone except the perpetrators — pull those trousers up young men!

What do you think about this saying from Havelock Ellis:  Charm is a women’s strength just as strength is a man’s charm. I love this saying; hits the nail right on the head in terms of how men and women view each other.

Do you own or have you ever worn flip flops/thongs? I do own thongs but they are not  rubber and they are strictly for the beach where they constitute suave and sensible footwear .

Which one of your vices, if any, do you think can lend and air of louche sophistication? Bright garish socks that do not match my outfit

Do you think chivalry is dead? A haunting question, which conveys a bleakness in our lives; no, I don’t think chivalry is dead, if so our soul is dead too, so chivalry is alive and well (if cautiously applied sometimes) in this suave cookie.

Are manners still as important today? ABSOLUTELY!  Who wants to see food mincing around in an open mouth, feet on chairs etc –  I do not even like people walking around eating in public –  God grant me strength.

What do you define as essential/basic etiquette for men? Having a conversation without dropping the “F” bomb, and being, or appearing to be, more interested in the other person than your self.

Who are the fashion influences that helped define your look? Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen  and Mandy my long suffering wife

Hat Doffing? Are you a fan? Do you practice?  Yes I am a fan of hat doffing but I need to practice this fine art more often so that it looks effortless and graceful.

Who would win the girl, The charmer with Wit or the Power with Money?

The charmer with wit will always win the long game

What is your classic favourite car?, what would you drive if you could? Jaguar of course, 1956  XK 140

 Brian
