It’s no secret in my family that I’m a huge Betty Grable fan and I love that I’m always finding out little gems of info still today.  Here’s 2 things I thought were interesting about this legend…  Stay tuned in coming weeks for a Vintage Hair Styling Tutorial I did inspired by Betty.

Despite her career as an entertainer, Grable suffered from “demophobia” AKA the fear of crowds. She also was a somnambulist, AKA a sleepwalker. Probably not the best combination of disorders for an entertainer but, hey, I guess none of that matters if your mother is grooming you for stardom.

In her iconic pin-up photo, Grable has her back to the camera as she looks over her shoulder, smiling coyly. While it may seem like the pose is an artistic moment of genius, the pose was actually done for a very practical reason: Grable was pregnant and showing. Yup, Grable flaunting a baby-bump definitely would have taken away from that “everyman’s gal” fantasy they were building.

The Royal Wedding

Repost from Insta:  @mrsduchessvintage

Theres been so much talk about her dress, her hair, her makeup etc, thought I’d share my 2 cents:

  • The dress was simply elegant, I loved the simple boat neckline and 3/4 sleeves and I loved that she wore white being a divorcee and all that …  I think (as with a christening) the birth of something new should be in the universal colour representing the birth of something and that is white.  This is the birth of their lifelong love, their lifelong marriage, the beginning of something wonderful…
  • The Tiara & Veil – Oh My Goodness – how Devine..  How precious and just simply stunning.  I did think the train was a little bit long and whispy but I guess thats the grandness of a Royal Wedding but I loved that she had the emblems of 53 Commonwealth Nations in the lace of her Veil train – perfect touch.
  • The Hair and makeup – I would have like to have seen a little more of a 30’s touch in her hairstyle to match that tiara and with regards to her makeup, well what can I say, with a face that beautiful you actually don’t need to do much at all and keeping it simple, elegant and natural just added to the whole simple elegance of the look. What did you all think?

The Hatmaker quarterly (1947)

Autumn Hat Inspirations from Film Favorites:

Luscious are these personality hats worn by glamorous film stars.  The feminine charm of feather be-trimmed models is never more delightfully used to adorn a pretty girl than the three selections of this page, all worn by Frances Gifford, a lovely Metro-Goldwyn Mayer actress.

No 1: An element of surprise comes with this ultra smart topper.  This is a brown felt with gay red birds trimming the crown.  Green and Red Sequins on the veil create a shimmering effect.

No 2:   For afternoon or cocktail wear Miss Gifford selects a small, straight blush pink sailor.  A black velvet ribbon is tied about the crown.  A bouquet of white, smooth, straight ostrich feathers is caught in the back and gently cascades down the front.

No 3:  This high beret of grey felt is trimmed with shades of slate, white and grey feathers.  It is an exciting creation, which Miss Gifford wears equally well with suits or dresses..

She’s an Eagle When She Flies

How beautiful are these lyrics.. You may not like Dolly so much but you can’t deny the beauty in which she describes those women in our lives…  To all of you… be that eagle when you fly…

…….  A kaleidoscope of colors
You can toss her around and round
You can keep her in your vision
But you’ll never keep her down
She’s a lover, she’s a mother
She’s a friend and she’s a wife
And she’s a sparrow when she’s broken
But she’s an eagle when she flies

Til then,

Stay Charming,

Chrissy xx
